Safety And Compliance
Course Pack: Plant And Chemical Safety
Chemical Safety
Course Description
This module provides operators and laboratory personnel with essential safety practices for handling chemicals, biological samples, heat sources, and glassware in utility lab environments. Learners learn to follow chemical-hygiene plans, apply GHS labeling and SDS guidance, and use engineering controls such as fume hoods, eyewash stations, and spill-response equipment. The module reinforces proper waste-handling procedures, contamination prevention, and incident-response steps to maintain a safe laboratory workspace.
Learning Objectives
1) Identify hazards from reagents, glassware, heat sources, and bio-samples.
2) Implement lab SOPs, chemical hygiene plans, and waste disposal.
3) Use fume hoods, eyewash/showers, and spill kits correctly.
4) Apply labeling (GHS) and inventory controls to reduce risk.
5) Respond to lab incidents and exposures appropriately.
Agenda
1) Chemical hygiene plan structure and SOP hierarchy
2) GHS labeling, SDS use, and lab specific hazard controls
3) Safe glassware handling and heating/pressure related risks
4) Ventilation devices and exposure response procedures
5) Waste handling, housekeeping, and contamination prevention standards
